“I am a skilled family law mediator who helps married and common law spouses negotiate the legal, financial and emotional transitions involved in separation and divorce. With my mediation approach separating couples can develop mutually acceptable agreements in a confidential setting, and resolve matters in a way that best meets the needs of all family members.”

Marla Gilsig is the owner, a divorce lawyer and family law mediator at Gilsig Divorce & Family Law Mediation.

Marla has a passion and a talent for resolving family law disputes in a way that doesn’t require litigation and the court system. Her goal is to preserve the dignity of your family during the difficult process of restructuring during the separation and divorce process. This is particularly important for children, who must remain in the forefront of any viable resolution. As a parent and as a Vancouver family lawyer, she takes that obligation very seriously.

Called to the BC bar in 1979, Ms. Gilsig is a qualified Vancouver divorce lawyer with extensive local training and accreditation in family law mediation. Her qualifications and experience include the following:

  • She is a practising lawyer accredited as a family law mediator by the Law Society of British Columbia.
  • She has completed the advanced mediation course—Family Law Mediation Level III—with the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia.
  • She has participated in Mediate BC’s Comprehensive Practicum, which offers experience mediating by assisting clients with family restructuring, and the division of property, assets, and liabilities.
  • She is a member of:
    •  Mediate BC,
    • Family Mediation Canada, and
    • The Association of Family and Conciliation Courts.
  • She is a member of both the Family Law Section and the Alternate Dispute Resolution Section of the Canadian Bar Association, British Columbia Branch.

In addition, Marla has worked on cases at all levels of the BC courts. She is active in continuing professional development and works with the Canadian Bar Association as a Section Chair. She also presents courses for the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia. She has co-authored many papers on access to justice topics and gives courses on communicating with clients who are elderly or have disabilities or other special needs.

Ms. Gilsig is a practising lawyer and a member in good standing of the Law Society of British Columbia. She holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Victoria Faculty of Law and was called to the Bar in British Columbia in 1979.
